Steps: Explicating Poetry

Identify general meaning
Divide poem into meaning clusters
Summarize meaning of each cluste
Identify & interpret metaphors
Identify ambiguous phrase
Identify how diction, rhythm, rhyme, etc. contribute to meaning
Put it all together
